Fly Fishing Lessons in the Smoky Mountains

Book a Trip

There are many fly fishing programs throughout the country as well as Western NC.  Mac Brown is the original instructor and outfitter in the Smoky Mountains town of Bryson City, NC since 1987!  None can offer the quality and personalized attention that the original outfitter created over 35 years ago. mcleods highland fly fishing

Fly fishing is similar to golf in that it requires years of dedication and instruction to perfect your game. The setting of the Smoky Mountains is always beautiful. Fly fishing lessons in the North Carolina Smoky Mountains provide the perfect setting for learning about trout fishing!

Mac Brown Fly Fish specializes in quality instruction and is not a retail store. Mac Brown, the founder of McLeod’s Highland Fly Fishing (1987), loves to teach fly fishing! The name of the company has been changed over the past decade to Mac Brown Fly Fish.

The surroundings in Western North Carolina are the perfect “office” for where I choose to bide my time. I love the beauty of this region and the simple pleasures it beholds. It has all of the characteristics to challenge anglers of all levels of skill.

Why take a Fly Fishing Lesson?

Mac Brown has been exposed to numerous techniques from professionals around the world. He first fished with a fly rod at the age of seven. Many of the techniques that he teaches are from original ideas that he has developed over the past 40 years. These techniques have appeared in such places as Fly Fisherman magazine (one of the industry’s leading publications), ESPN, public television, Angling Report, and Outdoor Life, to name a few.

Lessons are Key for Fly Fishing Improvement

As an Associate Professor of Western Carolina University, Mac brought teaching fly fishing at the collegiate level in the mid-’90s. He has the most extraordinary and extensive database for conditions and what trout feed on throughout the year found anywhere in the region. Mac teaches techniques that enable others to catch trout on a consistent basis.

Original Outfitter for NC Trout Fishing!

Mac Brown Fly Fish is the oldest permitted and licensed outfitter in the region! We ran fly fishing programs in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Nantahala National Forests. It has achieved an international reputation for excellence in fly fishing instruction over the years.

My techniques and methods will not be found in books for the reason that the “act of fishing” is best taught on stream. Most kinesthetic sports require teaching to be more hands-on.  They are a compilation of numerous friends and mentors that also have shared information with others!

Whether beginner or expert, you are assured of coming away with a learning experience that is second to none anywhere in the country. This is the best investment you could possibly make in improving your skill level while laying a foundation. My goal is to share my knowledge and passion for this magnificent sport with you above all for your experience. mcleods highland fly fishing

Best Quality Fly Fishing Trips

A lesson will alleviate decades of frustration through trial and error for those that wish to stay “self-taught”. I have a keen eye for suggesting various techniques that provide instantaneous improvement for people of all levels of skill. Perfect these techniques on the water to grow your skillset. I am always seeking better methods for “tweaking” new techniques for the future.

Mac Brown Fly Fish offers fly fishing instruction second to none as a result of many decades of teaching. My goal is to make you aware of the problems involved and offer the tools necessary for overcoming these challenges. Growth over the past three decades has been flattering in Bryson City, NC. The majority of my work is through word of mouth and repeat customers.

Trout Fishing North Carolina

I enjoy the simple lifestyle characteristic of the southern Appalachian people with their appreciation of “important” matters. This region is one of the most diverse and beautiful modern-day utopias in the country. The technical challenges the region provides is never-ending! Diverse currents and dense canopy equate to technical in fly fishing because there are more things to keep from hitting!

Some of the finest fly casters I have ever met are from this region because they have conquered piloting the rod in every casting plane.

You have my promise to provide you with the highest quality instruction of fly fishing for trout that you have ever experienced. The region provides excellent year-round angling opportunities as a result of the temperate climate. Peak times are spring and fall hence book early in these seasons.
