Fly Casting and Rigging for Trout Fishing

There was a large market study conducted by 3M which concluded that the biggest two reasons that newbies were intimidated by taking up fly fishing were casting and knots! The internet is loaded with knots on places like YouTube for you to learn or we can show the few relevant knots you need to learn. The reality is you hire experienced fly fishers to show you what you need to practice with your casting and on the stream tactics in order for improvement. Practice in the yard a few times a week for just fifteen minutes can work wonders for what you learn to do on the stream.

Anyone can learn to fly fish in a fun and relaxed setting so that you become efficient with your actions. The main ingredient it will require is the desire to improve. So the first step would be to set out with the goal of becoming an efficient caster. If you can cast accurately with minimal motion then your chances of doing well on the water increase. Casting is not a difficult hurdle to overcome if you invest just a very brief amount of time to it per week. It does not take decades for learning to be efficient with your casting. It can be mastered in very short order if you practice the correct things at home.

Knots and rigging are most easily learned with larger materials like parachute cord for conveying the concept of the steps involved. There are only a couple of knots you need to learn for being able to become self-sufficient on the stream. Just like casting takes a commitment with some practice, so do knots! We regularly see folks on the stream that decide to change a fly during a great hatch that takes far too long. Many knots only take a few seconds to accomplish.

The next step is learning where the fish holds in the stream. These good holding spots change on the water depending on bug activity. Reading the water well pays off huge dividends once your casting is accurate enough to grid off sections on the stream. More important than just reading the water would be recognizing the fish behavior as you blend into the stream. This again requires only that you remain observant into what is going on around you while on the stream. William Wordsworth said it best in his poem “As the Tables Turned” when he wrote:

Enough of science and of books,

Throw down those barren leaves,

Come forth and bring with you a heart,

That watches and receives.

That poem sums it up nicely for what the sport of fly fishing is all about. Paying attention to the finer details on the stream and learning from them.

The best part about your pursuits of trout throughout the world is that they require clean and cold water. Trout reside in some of the most beautiful places on the planet. Learning to fly fish is not just for trout though and you can use your tackle for the pursuit of all fishes!
