Fly casting terms that I have used over the past three decades for teaching and instructing fly casting. I began compiling terms used in fly casting when creating my fly casting book, Casting Angles, around 1988.
It was during this time period that I felt like the sky is the limit! The instructor community terms were based on archaic clock face positions. I was amazed at how long the art form of fly casting had been around, yet terms were lacking.
The formation of a loop is common in fly casting yet there were no terms for even describing the foundation of fly flinging.
Analogies and word pictures are what make great instructors. Having the ability to connect with all types of people for deciding which word pictures to use.
Quick results in teaching are dependent on the connection you have established and the student’s former experiences. The terms and definitions are more valuable for the instructor community.
