Fly line double haul implies a direct increase in fly line speed! The animated clips for learning to haul the fly line will assist you if you follow slooooow motion with the clip. Hauling the line is an essential skill set for all fly fishers.

Practice the motion with only the hands in the beginning. Instructors have coined this term as pantomime. It is one of the keys to success in teaching advanced motions in short order.

The hauling motion tends to apply the speed of the cast while the rod hand guides the fly rod similar to the keel on a boat. Double hauling causes an exponential component to overall fly line speed.

This was studied in 1994 at WCU with the use of photographic time gates to provide quantification for actual line speeds. Learning to double haul is one of the greatest assets for shooting line under low obstacles or combating wind.
