Fly Rod Actions Understanding fly rod actions, modulus, rod feel, and dampening from the studies at Western Carolina Univesity in 1996. It would be best to avoid rods with extreme actions unless a highly-skilled caster has a specific need. For example, distance casting may benefit from rods with faster action due to the ability to…

Fly Rod Attributes
Fly rod attributes study was conducted at Western Carolina University in NC. Mac Brown was the Associate Professor of the fly fishing courses in 1996-1999.
The fly rod study includes 20 accomplished fly casters for a blind study with remarks on a questionnaire. A fly rod is a tool used to make casting a line an easy task, hence it enables you to deliver your offering!
The materials lab at WCU was at my disposal to study everything necessary that may seem important.
The most significant factors that will affect the feel of the rod include weight & more importantly weight distribution. Dampening is a term used to describe how quickly the rod comes to a rest after the cast. Other important attributes include modulus, balance point, swing weight, rod action, and others.
The study includes 54 fly rods with a 9′ foot length (all five weight rods). Rods vary in retail price from $30.00 -$900.00 for single handed fly rods hence why such a huge difference? The factors from the WCU study can help fly fishers choose a fly rod that assists them on the water!
Learn how these choices enhance your appreciation of choosing the correct tool because your comfort on the water is important! There is no perfect rod for all circumstances because conditions may change while fishing.
Choose a fly rod that you can afford and that balances well enough to tolerate when actually casting all day on the water!
Understanding Fly Rod Balance, Swing Weight, Deflection, Continuity and Frequency
Fly Rod Balance Point Understanding fly rod balance, swing weight, deflection, and frequency are a few of the significant factors found from the WCU fly rod study. One of the first impressions the caster feels when picking up the rod is its balance. The figures of balance which are included in the data are derived by…
Considerations For Choosing A Fly Rod
Considerations For Choosing A Fly Rod The fly rod is a “tool” for the fly fisher pursuing all types of fish. Considerations for choosing a fly rod was compiled in 1996 while teaching fly fishing at WCU. Many have heard instructors say “let the rod do the work” and I can assure you that it…
