Trout Fishing the Smoky Mountains
Trout fishing the Smoky Mountains has many opportunities for the fly angler due to endless rivers. Bryson City, NC is one of the top ten cities in the nation for outdoor adventure. Bryson City trout fishing makes up a huge slice of opportunities for outdoor recreation. The nickname “Trout Mecca” of the South Eastern United States is in many publications over the last decade. It attracted me back in 1987 to move full time into the Nantahala River gorge after hiking the Appalachian Trail.
The area is one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world because of glacial movements millions of years ago. The sheer numbers of freshwater fish are second only to the Amazon rainforest. Bryson City is nestled next to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park which makes up over 40% of Swain County. The Nantahala National Forest encompasses much of the county as well. The reason it drew me to the area in 1987 was due to 85% of the county was government land. Now that is a huge playground for outdoor recreation. Most of the businesses in the county cater in one way or another to the draw of this huge playground.
